. ATHENS, Ohio – Kent State took the first set of the night before dropping the Mid-American Conference season opener, 3-1 (25-21, 16-25, 19-25, 20-25), to host Ohio on Thursday night inside of the Convocation Center.

The Golden Flashes (7-8, 0-1 MAC) received double-double performances from freshman and redshirt freshman. Ellison posted 10 kills and 16 digs, while Haffner tallied 35 assists and 10 digs to go with five kills in the first conference action for the talented youngsters.
Both teams totaled 78 digs in the match, and Ohio held a slim 48-47 advantage in kills. The difference came down to blocking and serve-receive, which were both dominated by Ohio. The Bobcats led 12-2 in blocks and 12 aces.
Kent State trailed by as many as three in the opening set, but closed with a 14-7 run to grab a 1-0 lead. Ellison shook a slow start and went for back-to-back kills to tie the set, 14-14. Following another Ellison kill a few plays later, junior put the Flashes ahead for the first time, 18-17, with a kill of her own.
Ohio tied it on the next point, but seniors and posted kills on the three points that ensue. Freshman delivered kills for points 23 and 24, and Ellison added her fifth detonation of the set to give Kent State a 25-21 victory.
In the second set, the Flashes fought back to within a point at 14-13 after trailing by as many as five. However, Ohio responded with nine straight points to pull away for a 25-16 victory, evening the match heading into intermission. Kent State came out strong in the third and held an early 3-0 lead. Back-to-back aces gave Ohio its first lead of the set at 8-6, and the Bobcats were able to extend the run to go ahead, 14-9.
A nice service run by Kober fueled the Flashes' answer and gave the visitors a 15-14 lead. The teams traded the next few points for a 17-17 tie before Ohio was able to separate and take the set, 25-19. It looked like Kent State would force a decisive fifth, as it held its largest lead of the night, 13-8, at the set at the midpoint in set four. Tough serving allowed Ohio to tie it at 14-14. The Bobcats took the lead for good, 18-17, on a kill by Jaime Kosiorek and went out for a 25-20 victory.
And each posted 10 kills to share the team lead with Ellison. Freshman had a match-high 28 digs to lead the floor defense. Kent State will be back in action on Saturday at Eastern Michigan to conclude the opening weekend of the conference season. Kent State is 51-27 all-time against Ohio. The Golden Flashes fell 93-54 earlier this season at home and dropped both meetings a season ago. The Bobcats have just one loss in 14 conference game. That came February 2 at Buffalo by a score of 51-43. Ohio is averaging 72.7 points per game and 38.7 rebounds per game, and is beating opponents by an average of 13.7 points this season. Individually, Kiyanna Black is the team leader in scoring, bringing in 18.5 points per game.
